Apply Mascara Like a Pro!

How does one achieve major lash drama? I've got the answers for you! I was lucky to chat with my friend, and makeup artist, Elizabeth Windust about the key steps in mastering mascara. Grab your tube and a mirror and read on!
  1. MAJOR KEY - make your lashes easier to reach by gently tugging on your brow bone with your thumb. I like to place my thumb right at the arch of my brow and slightly pull up. This makes the eye and lashes a bit easier to reach, and you can skip the awkward face-scrunching.
  2. You must curl your lashes. Don't skip this step! Begin by curling at the base of the lash and then gradually move the curler up the length of your lash, curling as you go. It's important to curl them this way so as to avoid creating a sharp bend or 90-degree-angle. We love the Shu Uemura curler and the Troy Surratt one too.
  3. Once your lashes are curled, it's time for mascara! Place the wand at the base of your lashes and wiggle back and forth. Don't worry about combing up quite yet. It's important to deposit a lot of mascara at the base of the lash, so continue to pack on product. Once you have a solid base, start to comb up the length of the lash. You can repeat this step and do a second or third coat for added drama! A great drugstore mascara is L'oreal Voluminous or splurge on Benefit Roller Lash.
  4. Comb out clumps and create separation by using a dry spooly brush or, even better, a lash comb. Since lash lines are curved and not straight lines, ideally your center lashes will face center, your inner lashes will angle towards your nose, and the outer will angle in the direction of your ear. Does that make sense?
