I recently started following @Beauty2theStreetz on Instagram and quickly become enthralled with the incredible, selfless work that Shirley Raines and her team are doing for the homeless women of Skid Row. I’ve spent countless hours with friends and coworkers (from the comforts of home) discussing and debating how best we can help the homeless of our communities- do we give them money? Do we donate to organizations that feed and house the homeless? Do we support community legislation making it easier or more difficult for them to sleep on the streets? There doesn’t seem to be an answer to solve the issue.

I am so moved by the efforts of @Beauty2theStreetz because they are helping the homeless feel more human, by offering showers, make-up, hair treatments, wigs, and most importantly connection and caring.

Their mission statement is simple- “Recognizing that the lack of a home does not mean a lack of humanity, Beauty 2 The Streetz aims to serve the homeless by providing necessities alongside the things that make us feel inherently human: a hot shower, a hearty meal, the hope-inducing feeling of looking in the mirror and loving what you see. We are building friendships based on equality and compassion and it is this, more than simply the hair and makeup, that brings beauty to the streets.”

This week The Vanity Project sent a care package of face masks and beauty wipes to Shirley & @Beauty2theStreetz and we look forward to finding ways to help their efforts.
