4 Natural/DIY Remedies for Red Wine Stains on Fabric

As grotesque as it may look (especially on light colored fabric), removing red wine stains is not that hard – as long as you know what to do. Desperation to salvage your clothes or carpet might tempt some of us to use harsh chemicals. Aside from potentially damaging your clothes, these chemicals can also damage the environment. Below are a few DIY natural remedies for red wine stain removal:

  1. Boiling Water

This technique is pretty straight-forward, particularly for clothes. Simply boil water, stretch the stained fabric over a bowl (fasten with a rubber band), and pour the water directly on to the stain.

  2. Baking Soda/Salt

The first step is to pour some water to dampen the stain and loosen the fabric. Then use a cleaning cloth or some paper towels to absorb the wine/water mixture. Next, sprinkle some baking soda or salt and go back to the party – leave it overnight. After a few hours, dab the stain with a clean cloth, and repeat the process until satisfied.

  3. Vinegar/Club Soda

Soak up the excess wine on your carpet with a sponge. Follow up immediately by applying club soda or using a mixture of vinegar and water to neutralize the wine pigments. Rinse afterward, and your fabric should be good as new.

  4. Dish Detergent/Hydrogen Peroxide

Apply a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and washing detergent to the stain and let it sit for a while. As the mixture soaks into the cloth or carpet, you’ll notice that the stain will gradually fade. When this happens, rinse off the fabric.
